Tony Stark, a genius billionaire weapons manufacturer, is kidnapped by terrorists and forced to build a devastating weapon. Instead, he builds a suit of armor to escape. Back home, he vows to stop manufacturing weapons and uses his technology to become the superhero Iron Man. However, he soon discovers that his company is being used by an enemy who wants to destroy everything he holds dear.


The film begins with Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.), a genius billionaire and CEO of Stark Industries, traveling to Afghanistan to demonstrate his company's latest weapon, the Jericho missile. However, his convoy is attacked by terrorists, and Stark is kidnapped.


In captivity, Stark is ordered to build a Jericho missile for the terrorists. Instead, he builds a suit of armor powered by an arc reactor to keep himself alive and to escape. With the help of fellow captive Dr. Yinsen, Stark completes the suit and fights his way out of captivity.


Back home, Stark announces that Stark Industries will no longer manufacture weapons. He begins work on a more advanced version of the suit of armor he built in captivity, using it to fight injustice as the superhero Iron Man.


With the help of his loyal assistant Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow) and his friend and military liaison Colonel James "Rhodey" Rhodes (Terrence Howard), Stark perfects the Iron Man suit and starts taking on various threats, including terrorists and arms dealers.


Stark's transformation into Iron Man captures the attention of the world, including journalist Christine Everhart (Leslie Bibb), who is determined to uncover the truth behind Stark's new identity.


Stark's business partner, Obadiah Stane (Jeff Bridges), betrays him and reveals that he has been supplying weapons to terrorists behind Stark's back. Stane steals Stark's arc reactor technology to build his own suit of armor, the Iron Monger, and attacks Stark.


Stark, with the help of Pepper and Rhodey, battles Stane and his Iron Monger suit. After a fierce fight, Stark emerges victorious, defeating Stane and saving the city from destruction.
